Mobilizing riparian communities to keep watersheds forested |
The aim of our project is to mobilize riparian community groups to protect and monitor changes in watersheds to keep them forested. The project fits within the overall objective of the GFW Small Grant Fund because it uses its fund and technology to advance its work. The project shall download and effectively use your high –resolution satellite imagery coupled with an array of geospatial data available to local scales to visualize and monitor local forests. |
Collaborative Watershed Sensitive Farming |
The project aims to restore quality on the Anambra-Imo River Basin fragile waters, particularly the Imo River, reducing its vulnerability to diffuse pollution from agricultural nitrates, phosphates, sediments and deforestation through a collaborative liaison leveraged by catchment sensitive farming (Eco Agriculture), knowledge sharing and awareness creation amongst farmers, landowners, local factories and residents, the government, NGOs and universities etc. Nutrient trading is envisaged as a component in the long term. |
Nigeria Climate Change Learning Network |
To identify and support small holder farmers, assisting them develop knowledge and understanding on climate change adaptation and mitigation approaches. To use the mass media, seminars, symposia, workshops, and on-site and off-site exposure trainings to espouse climate change hazards and risk governance opportunities for small holder farmer cooperatives and allied NGOs. |
Managing run-offs and erosion for food security in Imo State communities |
Using the WOCAT methodology, this project assisted many small holder farmers in Owerri, eastern Nigeria; whose livelihoods are based on small-scale cropping and livestock agriculture to sustainably harvest and use rainwater through agronomic, vegetative, and structural measures. |
Interactive on-the farm climate change adaptation educational programs for rice farmers |
The project aims to substantially boost rice harvests and raise the income of local rice farmers in Uboma Nigeria, through a coterie of climate change adaptation measures that includes interactive educational programs and on-the farm adaptation activities that builds the capacity of the farmers on structural and management measures that conserves water, control soil degradation and enhances productivity in the field hence effectively adapting local rice varieties to changes in rainfall patterns as a result of climate change. |
Moringa Oleifera project with local farmers in Umuna, Onuimo LGA, Imo State |
The project promoted the sustained use and up-scaling of Moringa in Household water treatment. It boosted the capacity of local farmers to cultivate and harvest high yielding Moringa Oleifera varieties. |
